THE RITE OF SPRING: CELEBRATING LIFE!
time to plan your race schedule
warmer weather is here

The Race Before Us | Oklahoma Sports & Fitness, March / April 2014 Issue

Waking up to at least a dusting of snow became the norm in the first two months of 2014. It was almost a weekly puzzle to figure out if our school days would be canceled, our work appointments affected, and our travel plans postponed.

And after the third or fourth round of winter weather, the beauty of the ice and snow tends to wear off. We’re definitely ready to get outside without our three layers, gloves, hats, and screw shoes. We’re anxious for action in the sun and springtime.

And yes, Oklahoma’s turn-on-a-dime weather can often be torture. A 65 degree day in January had my son commenting, “It’s perfect weather to go to a baseball game.” I could almost smell it in the air: fresh green grass, leather mitts, new running shoes, lilac blooms, burgers on the grill, and that familiar earthy smell that gets your blood pumping.

Since my wife and I ran our first marathon in Oklahoma City nine years ago, nothing screams “springtime” like the Memorial Marathon each year. For those participating in the event, the Memorial Marathon is an unmatched experience. It reminds us of the tragedy that took place on Oklahoma soil, but it rejuvenates us with the resolve that we can overcome evil. It leads us to enjoy what we have been given and love those around us. By celebrating life, we refuel our purpose and determination each April. In anticipation of the 14th annual event, read “Honor and Celebration” in this issue.

Also in this issue, be sure to read our conversation with Oklahoma Landrunner Kevin Lynes. Despite numerous setbacks in 2013, Kevin continues to share his zest for life and running with others. He is another testament to the tremendous character of our running communities throughout the state - communities which continue to grow and inspire so many around them.

Embrace the spring of 2014, and keep moving towards your newest goal. Be an active part of the sights, sounds, and smells at your local road races or multisport events. Inspire and serve those around you, and celebrate springtime. Celebrate life!
